What ꕃ means
It represents one spoken syllable, transcribed “ki.” Vai uses a syllabary, a writing system where each sign stands for a syllable. ꕃ helps spell Vai words rather than naming an English-language object.
Vai writing developed in Liberia in the early 1830s to record the Vai language. The earliest surviving sample is a page written in 1834 by Fan Dawo Kelondo; Vai writing was used for correspondence and records tied to trade.
Vai’s story is a script history
Efforts to standardize the script took place in 1899 and again in 1962; they adjusted its sign inventory and punctuation.
During the first half of the twentieth century, Vai’s syllabic structure influenced Mende, Loma, and Kpelle syllabaries. Their makers devised new signs, so the connection is historical influence rather than shared glyphs.
How do you type ꕃ?
Type k followed by i in a Vai transliteration layout. The documented browser layout maps that key sequence to ꕃ. In its 2023 revision, the guide pointed mobile users to Gboard support.
On systems without a Vai-capable font, a square or question mark can replace the glyph even when the stored character is correct.
Language-specific: use it in Vai writing or as a deliberate reference to the script.
