vai syllable nggu

Vai syllable Nggu

182/300

ꖵ is the Vai syllable nggu, roughly the nasal at the end of “sing,” followed by a hard g and “oo.” Alone it has no fixed meaning; its Vai word supplies that. MediaWiki’s 2023 Vai transliteration layout enters it with ng then u.

What ꖵ means

One syllable; the surrounding Vai word supplies its meaning.

Vai writing began in what is now Liberia in the early 1830s; the earliest surviving record is dated 1834. It served correspondence, records and trade. In an origin story, a “Vai book” appears in a dream, placing Vai writing beside Arabic and Latin used by neighboring communities. Later standardization favored syllable signs over earlier whole-word signs. A link to Cherokee writing has been proposed but remains conjectural.
