What ꖼ means
It is read as one syllable inside a Vai word.
The Vai syllable ngon starts with ŋ, the nasal ng sound heard at the end of English “sing,” then an open o voiced through the nose. The phonetic transcription is ŋɔ̃.
Why did Vai speakers develop this script?
It gave Vai speakers a way to write their own language.
Vai is spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Its script is a syllabary: each character generally writes a whole spoken syllable, rather than one letter sound. The writing system took shape in the early 1830s, primarily through Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and other Vai speakers. Early accounts link their work to learning how people wrote at Monrovia; Bukẹlẹ later described a dream as his inspiration.
A comparative manuscript study covers 1834–2005 and records changes in glyph shapes and inventory. The University of Liberia published a standard syllabary in 1962, but that edition did not eliminate every variant. Latin and Arabic writing were present in the region. A 2002 historical study examined a proposed Cherokee influence but did not establish a direct link.
How do I type ꖼ?
In MediaWiki’s Vai layout, type ngx.
The ng row selects the consonant, and x selects the ɔ series. Other layouts may differ; choose the entry for ŋɔ̃ if their key labels are unfamiliar.
Neutral and script-specific: ꖼ belongs in Vai writing or discussion of the Vai script.
