What ꕇ means
It represents one Vai syllable, “ni.” The n is followed by the vowel sound in English “knee.” The Vai syllabary writes spoken syllables as individual signs, so ꕇ usually sits inside a Vai word rather than standing for a whole word by itself.
Vai speakers developed the script in Liberia in the early 1830s; Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ and other Vai speakers are associated with its creation. Outsiders reported the new writing in 1834. An early surviving manuscript, the Book of Ndole, also called the Book of Rora, is dated around 1845.
Vai writing served practical needs such as correspondence and record keeping, especially in trade. Its forms changed as people used and recorded the script; a formal standardization effort at the University of Liberia followed in 1962. Manuscripts from different periods can therefore show different forms.
Did Cherokee writing influence Vai?
Cherokee influence is debated, not settled. Scholars have considered whether Cherokee writing offered a model for Vai, while historical accounts also discuss Vai speakers’ contact with Latin and Arabic literacy. Resemblance alone cannot prove that one script descended from another.
Vai later inspired other Indigenous writing systems in West Africa. That is a historical connection between scripts as a whole; it does not make ꕇ itself a descendant of a particular Cherokee, Latin, or Arabic sign.
Use it in Vai-language writing or when discussing the script; elsewhere it is unexplained to readers who do not know Vai.
