What ꔣ means
ꔣ writes one spoken beat in Vai. Its reading depends on the Vai word around it.
Vai writing began around 1832–1833 for correspondence and long-distance trade; it also expressed Vai intellectual and political autonomy. Reports from 1834 describe Vai schools and books. A manuscript from that period is identified as the earliest surviving one in a script developed in sub-Saharan Africa. Early forms included logograms—signs for whole words. Standardization from the 1840s–1960s made the writing mostly sound-based, with signs for spoken syllables. Vai writers knew Arabic and Latin-letter writing; a proposed Cherokee connection remains conjectural.
