Text symbol

What ꔽ means

It writes one spoken Vai syllable.

The Vai script is a syllabary: each character represents one spoken syllable, not a whole word.

Vai accounts credit several writers led by Mọmọlu Duwalu Bukẹlẹ with creating the script; one says they wanted to send letters. Outside reports describe it in 1834. Merchants used it for correspondence and records. In the first half of the twentieth century, Mende, Loma, and Kpelle scripts adopted its syllabic model and created their own characters.
