What 󠅭 means
It narrows the glyph forms available for the preceding character. In an ideographic variation sequence, a Han character comes first; this selector follows it.
The registered pair identifies allowed forms; after another ideograph, this selector can mean something unrelated. Separate collections serve scholars, governments, and publishers.
Why is variation selector 126 invisible?
It has no visible shape of its own. A supported pair may alter the base glyph; without support, the base appears as usual and the selector remains invisible.
The extended selectors were proposed in 2001 to mark glyph variants in plain text without encoding every shape separately. Adobe-Japan1, a Japanese font glyph collection, became the first IVD collection on 2007-12-14.

Questions people ask
1Why does 󠅭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
