What 󠅶 means
Only a defined pair can select a glyph.
A selector has no fixed meaning by itself: the base character determines the glyph subset it names.
Why put an invisible selector after a Han character?
Plain text can preserve a glyph choice without rich-text formatting.
For Han characters—Chinese-derived characters used across East Asian scripts—scholars, governments, and publishers need different variant collections. The Ideographic Variation Database gives each registered pair one stable definition.
Its first collection, Adobe-Japan1, was registered 2007-12-14.

Questions people ask
1Why does 󠅶 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Variation Selectors Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
