What 󠅷 means
To preserve exact glyph forms in plain text.
A 1997 proposal marks the early record of ideograph selectors. By 2001, Unicode discussions described the problem: one Han character could have recognized glyph forms, and names sometimes needed one exact form to survive in email, programs, or databases. The idea developed into the Ideographic Variation Database (IVD), a public registry of specific base-character-plus-selector pairs. Each pair requests a glyph form, not a different word or pronunciation.

Questions people ask
1Why does a variation selector disappear?
When a sequence is invalid or unsupported, text software shows the base character as usual and ignores the selector, so there is no separate mark to see.
