variation selector-137

Variation Selector-137

121/240

Variation Selector-137 is a hidden formatting mark that can steer how a character is drawn. Its number is not a meaning or a variant choice by itself; the surrounding text and registered data decide the result. Seen alone, it has no reliable message to decode.

Text symbol

What 󠅸 means

It is an invisible instruction for a preceding character's glyph. It has no standalone picture or pronunciation, and its number is not a request for “variant 137.” A defined result comes only from the complete base-plus-selector sequence. By itself, it should be treated as invisible text metadata.

The Unicode-era design evolved to solve a plain-text problem: different glyphs of a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean (CJK) ideograph can matter in names, publishing, government, or scholarship, yet a document still needs to carry the chosen form. A 2003 Unicode proposal describes variation selectors as a way to experiment with CJK glyph variants without relying on font selection alone. The later Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) gives registered base-plus-selector pairs stable definitions. In Japanese name and place records, that precision can preserve the required written form.

What does it mean if someone sends it alone?

It usually means you received formatting metadata, not a message. The mark is default-ignorable: software may omit it from display unless the preceding character forms a supported pair.

If it follows a registered ideograph, a compatible font and application can draw the requested variant. If the sequence is unregistered or the font uses a different IVD collection, the base may keep its ordinary form or show another supported form. That is a rendering mismatch, not a hidden emotional signal.

Specialist text metadata for glyph fidelity, not a chat symbol.

Do not append it at random: without the right base and registry, it does not choose a meaningful variant.

︎ Variation Selector-15 is also invisible, but it belongs to the basic range and requests text presentation for supported symbols.

️ Variation Selector-16 is the emoji-presentation control; VS137 does not turn a base character into emoji.

Questions people ask

1

Will every font show a different glyph?

No. The font and application need support for the exact registered sequence; otherwise the selector can be ignored and the base character's ordinary glyph remains.
