Variation Selector-255

VS255 is an invisible control that can follow a Han ideograph—a character used in Chinese, Japanese, and some Korean writing—in an ideographic variation sequence to select a registered glyph variant. By itself it has no reading; an unregistered or unsupported pair leaves the base character unchanged. It is not an emoji-style switch.

What 󠇮 means

No; that was only a proposal. A 2016 proposal for Pan-CJK fonts—fonts serving Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text—would have used VS255 for ideograph variants in the People's Republic of China (PRC) region. The proposed collection was not registered. The IVD release dated 2026-08-03 contains no registered sequence using VS255, so the number alone does not mean “Chinese glyph.”

Why does 󠇮 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
