variation selector-49

Variation Selector-49

Variation Selector-49 is an invisible mark that can request a particular written form for the character before it, but only in a defined sequence. These ideographic variation sequences preserve written distinctions in specialist text; by itself, the selector has no conversational meaning.

What 󠄠 means

It requests a particular written form for the character before it.

The documented trail includes a variation-selector proposal dated 2000-08-15 and an ideograph-specific registry design documented in 2004. This approach lets plain text preserve a chosen form of Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters in names, place names, and historical records when font choice or rich text cannot carry that distinction.

Its effect depends on the exact base-plus-selector sequence and its registered collection. The Ideographic Variation Database (IVD), a registry for these sequences, lists no registered sequence containing U+E0120 in its release dated 2026-08-03. Alone, VS49 has no conversational meaning.

Technical and invisible; it belongs in text workflows that preserve ideographic forms, not as a standalone chat mark.

A random selector will not change the base; unsupported pairs still look ordinary.

Questions people ask

2

Why is variation selector-49 invisible?

It is meant to be invisible. When a system has no matching registered sequence for the preceding character, it shows the base normally and VS49 adds no visible form.

Is variation selector-49 an emoji?

No. It selects ideographic character forms. VS16 (U+FE0F) is a different character used for emoji presentation.
