Variation Selector-47

31/240

VS47 is an invisible mark used after a CJK (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) character to request a registered glyph variant. It is not a readable symbol on its own; it belongs in precise typesetting and records that need a particular character form. A valid sequence may still look unchanged if the font does not show that variant.

Text symbol

What 󠄞 means

It requests a registered glyph variant for the ideograph before it.

VS47 is an instruction attached to an ideograph, a character used in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean writing. It follows that base character to form an ideographic variation sequence (IVS): the base keeps the character's identity, while the selector asks the text system for a particular drawn form.

Unicode's documented design work for ideographic variation sequences begins in 2003. The system lets scholars, governments, and publishers preserve regional or historical character forms in plain text. As of 2026, the Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) includes collections such as Hanyo-Denshi, based on Japanese administrative character distinctions.

Why is variation selector 47 invisible?

Alone, it has no visible reading and normally does nothing.

VS47 is a default-ignorable mark: systems without support normally behave as if it were absent. It must follow its intended base character; by itself, it does not make a visible symbol.

A registered Hanyo-Denshi example is 邉󠄞, which identifies glyph variant TK01090330. The sequence can preserve a precise character form in Japanese font or record-keeping work, but it does not change how 邉 is read. A font may still show the default form or no visible difference.

Technical and niche: it points to exact CJK text, font, or record-keeping work, not a conversational mood.

Sent alone, it may appear as nothing and leave the recipient unsure what it was meant to modify.

Drift: As of 2026, Unicode marks Hanyo-Denshi as deprecated in favor of Moji_Joho; the collection can change while VS47's role remains glyph selection.

Questions people ask

2

Why does variation selector 47 look unchanged in my font?

The registered sequence and its rendering are separate: your font may lack that collection's alternate outline, or the variant may share the default glyph.

Can variation selector 47 make text bold?

No. Variation selectors do not apply text-wide styling such as bold or italics; use text formatting for that.
