What 󠄝 means
It requests a particular drawn form of the character before it.
VS46 is invisible on its own. After a Chinese, Japanese, or Korean ideograph, it can complete a registered ideographic variation sequence (IVS). The base character keeps its reading and meaning; the sequence requests a permitted glyph, or written shape. The registered pair determines which shape appears.
Why was Variation Selector-46 made?
It preserves specific ideograph shapes in plain text.
The proposal trail for ideographic selectors begins in 1997; the design developed through 2003–04. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditions can use different glyphs for one unified character, and a font preference alone cannot preserve the chosen form in a plain-text name, place, or historical text.
The design moved toward separately registered collections because regional and historical character inventories can conflict. The Ideographic Variation Database (IVD) records approved base-plus-selector assignments; Adobe-Japan1, a Japanese collection, was registered in 2007.
What does it mean when someone sends this invisible character?
Treat it as formatting, not a hidden message.
If it arrives alone, treat it as invisible formatting; you need not respond to it. If it follows a CJK ideograph in a name, place, or historical text, keeping the pair can preserve a specific written form. Removing the selector may leave the base character's default glyph.
Technical typography: a complete sequence signals that an exact CJK glyph form matters.
Do not expect a visible result or response from VS46 alone.

2Can I use VS46 by itself?
No. Its effect requires a base ideograph and a registered sequence; alone, it is invisible and normally ignored.
Why did the glyph not change?
The font or app may not support that exact IVS. In that case, it displays the base character normally and ignores VS46.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
