Variation Selector-7

Variation Selector-7 (VS7) is an invisible marker that requests a defined glyph variant after a base character. Unicode documents it for Egyptian-hieroglyph rotation sequences; alone or after an unrelated character, it has no visible effect. It is not the emoji switch: VS16 is.

What ︆ means

It requests a defined glyph variant; alone, it has no visible effect. VS7 is a nonspacing selector, not a picture, emoji, or message. A Unicode variation sequence is one base character plus one selector, requesting a defined glyph variant in plain text. VS7 has no standalone manuscript meaning; its history is Unicode engineering, while any historical meaning belongs to the hieroglyph it follows.

In Unicode 17.0, VS7 is documented after selected Egyptian hieroglyphs for rotations from 285° to 345° in left-to-right text. That ties it to the hieroglyph rotation system, not to a standalone Egyptian symbol. If a rotation would change a sign's meaning, Unicode uses a separate character instead.

Why is variation selector 7 invisible?

It is default-ignorable and has no standalone glyph. Pasted alone, it is an incomplete variation sequence, not a space character. In Unicode 17.0 processing, an unlisted base-plus-selector pair keeps the base's normal appearance and the selector is ignored.

Sequence-aware fallback first looks for a font supporting the full pair. If none is found, the base renders normally and VS7 disappears visually. OpenType Format 14 is the font-table mechanism for those supported pairs, so the same text can look unrotated where font support is missing.

Variation selector 7 versus variation selector 16?

VS16 requests emoji presentation; VS7 does not. VS15 and VS16 are the text and emoji presentation selectors. VS7 belongs to the general variation mechanism and affects only its sanctioned bases.

The Unicode 17.0 emoji variation list does not use FE06, so adding VS7 to a letter or emoji is not a style toggle. Use the selector defined for that base and presentation.

Technical and invisible: it belongs in encoded text, not as a casual chat symbol.

Do not send VS7 alone expecting a visible symbol or emoji.

Questions people ask

2

Does variation selector 7 make emoji?

No. VS7 is not the emoji-presentation selector; it only works in defined base-plus-selector sequences.

Can variation selector 7 rotate any character?

No. Only listed sequences can change rendering; any other character plus VS7 keeps its normal appearance.
