variation selector-74

Variation Selector-74

58/240

Variation Selector-74 is an invisible Unicode mark that selects a registered glyph variant after a compatible CJK ideograph; alone, it has no meaning. It was designed for exact glyph forms in publishing, names, scholarship, and government records. As of 2026-08-03, the Unicode Ideographic Variation Database has no registered sequence using VS74, so placing it alone usually changes nothing.

Text symbol

What 󠄹 means

It selects a registered glyph variant after a compatible base.

Variation selectors were introduced in Unicode 3.2 (2002); the plane-14 range containing VS74 arrived in Unicode 4.0 (2003). They were made so text could request an exact CJK ideograph glyph for publishing, scholarship, personal names, or government records without encoding every shape as a separate character.

The mechanism evolved through named collections: Adobe-Japan1 entered the IVD on 2007-12-14, and Japan’s Moji_Joho collection was first registered on 2014-05-16 for government-oriented glyph data. VS74 has no universal “74th shape”: its effect belongs to the complete base-plus-selector pair and the collection that defines it.

Why does it look empty?

Unsupported or incomplete pairs hide the selector.

A valid pair can change the font’s chosen glyph, but an unsupported or unregistered pair normally leaves the base unchanged and the selector invisible. A standalone VS74 therefore looks blank; it is not an emoji, a mood marker, or a switch for bold, italics, or arbitrary fonts.

If you need an exact CJK form, use the documented IVS offered by the relevant font or input method. Do not append VS74 at random: the selector number alone does not tell software which form to draw.

Technical and behind the scenes; it belongs in text data, not casual messages.

Do not send it alone expecting a visible symbol.

Questions people ask

2

Why did adding VS74 change nothing?

Usually because the pair is unsupported or unregistered. Unsupported selectors stay invisible and leave the base glyph unchanged.

Is VS74 a hidden emoji?

No. It is a nonspacing mark for text variation; it has no emoji artwork or standalone presentation.
