Variation Selector-85

69/240

Variation Selector-85 is an invisible character that requests a registered glyph form of a CJK ideograph (a character used in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean writing); alone, it means nothing. Unicode’s Ideographic Variation Database snapshot dated 2026-08-03 lists no registered sequence using VS85, so use it only when a documented pairing calls for it. It is not a font switch.

Text symbol

What 󠅄 means

It requests a registered glyph form for the CJK ideograph before it.

Plain text can represent the same CJK ideograph without specifying every historical or regional glyph form. Proposals for variant tags in Unicode’s supplementary character range called Plane 14 appeared in 1997; an ideographic variation registry proposal followed in 2003.

VS85 has no universal “style 85.” An ideographic variation sequence (IVS) is a registered pair: a CJK ideograph plus a selector. The registration identifies the requested glyph form, so VS85 is a mechanism, not a message.

Will VS85 change what I see?

Only with a registered pair and a font that supports it.

VS85 is default-ignorable: after an ordinary letter, emoji, or punctuation, it has no sanctioned effect, and the preceding character keeps its usual form. A registered pair still needs a font that contains the requested glyph.

UTF-16 stores VS85 as the surrogate pair \uDB40\uDD44. Keep both code units together when handling the text.

Technical and invisible; it matters in exact-glyph CJK text handling.

Alone, it produces no visible mark.

Questions people ask

2

Why did my invisible character disappear?

VS85 has no visible glyph of its own, so a text editor may show nothing for it. That does not mean it changed the character before it.

Can VS85 switch fonts?

No. It can request a glyph form only in a registered ideographic sequence, and the font must support that form; VS85 does not choose another font.
