Vedic Tone Candra Below

9/43

᳘ is a Vedic accent mark whose exact reading depends on the recitation tradition. It usually marks a pitch pattern; in a few specialized passages it marks short e or o. It belongs to Vedic notation, not ordinary Sanskrit spelling.

Text symbol

What ᳘ means

It marks Vedic recitation pitch, with a value set by the text.

Vedic texts are Sanskrit works with set recitation traditions, and each textual recension can assign this mark a different job. In the Kāṭhaka and Maitrāyaṇī Saṃhitās, Vedic collections, it marks an independent svarita, a named pitch pattern. In Maitrāyaṇī, it appears before an anudātta, a low tone, or ekaśruti, level-pitch recitation. In the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa, a Vedic ritual prose text, it can replace the usual anudātta mark to show a low tone. The edition’s notation key tells you which reading applies.

A historical account places surviving South Indian Vedic manuscripts with accent marks no earlier than the mid-sixteenth century. That dates written notation, not the oral recitation traditions it preserves.

Why can it mark short vowels?

In a few Vedic settings, it also records vowel length.

A candra mark keeps the length cue attached to the vowel; using the numeral 1 could make it look like a Sāma Vedic tone number.

This is specialized notation, not a general Sanskrit spelling rule. Examples include the Sāma Veda’s Sātyamugri and Rāṇāyanīya traditions, the Ṛgveda’s nyūṅkha chant, and Gāyatra Gāna, a Sāma Veda chant.

How does ᳘ stack with a syllable?

It follows the syllable it modifies as a combining mark.

Place ᳘ after its Indic syllable. If another tone mark follows, the order is syllable ᳘ tone mark; font shaping puts that later mark underneath. The base syllable and font affect the stack’s appearance, so a bare sample alone cannot identify the reading.

Vedic texts use distinct tone notation in traditions associated with the four Vedic collections—the Ṛgveda, Sāmaveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda—as well as the Śatapathabrāhmaṇa. These signs share a recitation function, but each tradition’s notation key sets their values.

Specialist Vedic notation: it marks recitation detail within a particular textual tradition.

Its tone value is recension-specific; check the edition’s key.

Why does ᳘ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
