What 𐺂 means
It writes the plain p consonant in modern Yezidi.
𐺂 is a letter within words, not a standalone sign. Modern spelling distinguishes it from 𐺃 Phe, which marks the same lip sound with a brief throat catch. Classical writing sometimes used Phe’s shape for both sounds, so the shape alone may not identify the sound in an older manuscript.
When does the Yezidi script first appear?
The oldest surviving examples are religious manuscripts.
Maṣḥafā Reš and Ketēbā Jelwa, two religious works, are often dated to the 12th or 13th centuries. The script’s history between those manuscripts and its revival is unclear.
In 2013, the Spiritual Council of Yezidis in Georgia revived the alphabet, and specialists adapted it for modern Yezidi/Kurmanji. Its uses included prayers, sacred books, council documents, letterheads, heraldry, and temple inscriptions. Its classical order follows Perso-Arabic ordering, but order alone does not prove descent from Arabic.
Why does 𐺂 display as a box?
The font needs Yezidi coverage to draw it.
𐺂 is a right-to-left text letter. If the selected font lacks a Yezidi glyph, the character may appear as an empty box; its exact appearance depends on the font.
Script-specific and formal: it belongs in Yezidi writing, including religious and community texts.
In modern spelling, 𐺃 marks the glottalized partner; it does not replace 𐺂.
