What ꒽ means
It groups Yi syllable signs for dictionary lookup.
The lookup system is modeled on Han radicals, stroke parts used to organize Chinese characters in dictionaries; ꒽ itself belongs to Yi writing.
Older Yi writing varied in glyphs and writing direction. Its earliest surviving inscription is on a bronze bell dated 1485. Village priests called bimo passed down religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Without Yi font coverage, ꒽ may appear as a missing-glyph box.
Questions people ask
1Why does ꒽ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
