What ꒤ means
It is a dictionary index sign, not a spoken syllable. In standardized Liangshan Yi writing, ꒤ groups syllable signs by a shared stroke, helping readers find entries in a Yi dictionary. It is an index label, not a word or syllable.
Written Yi has evidence going back more than a millennium ago, and paper texts survive from at least the late Ming period. Guizhou, Liangshan, and Sani Yi traditions used different radical sets. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 for one Yi variety, so its index is not universal across Yi writing.
Why does ꒤ look different across fonts?
Fonts can draw the same character with different outlines. Unicode does not prescribe one exact outline, so ꒤ may look different across fonts. If it appears as a box or blank, the active font may lack Yi-script coverage.
Don't confuse it with
1Questions people ask
1Why does ꒤ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
