What ꁴ means
It has no single English translation on its own.
ꁴ is a syllabic character in the Liangshan standard writing system for Nuosu, one of the Yi languages. Its romanization, bby, identifies the syllable and tone, not an English word. The surrounding Nuosu word supplies the meaning.
The Liangshan standard containing ꁴ draws on older Yi writing traditions. Those traditions varied by region in the syllables they included, glyph shapes and orientation, and writing direction. This standard represents Liangshan Nuosu, not every Yi language or writing tradition.
How old is the Yi writing behind it?
Its exact early ancestry is uncertain; the dated record is much later.
Early claims point to marks on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone, but concrete, datable evidence before the Yuan and Ming period is limited. The earliest surviving large inscribed object identified in the Yi-script record is a bronze bell dated 1485. Paper and sheepskin manuscripts date to around 1500.
Traditional Yi writing carried religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts passed down by village priests. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support textbooks, literature, and newspapers. Its documented lineage runs through older Yi traditions, not Han Chinese character forms.
How do I type ꁴ?
Use a Yi input method, then select the syllable.
On Windows, add the Yi input method, type the romanized syllable with English keys, then choose ꁴ from the candidate list; Enter or Space accepts the first suggestion. Nuosu uses pitch patterns called tones to distinguish syllables. In the romanization, bare bby has no final t, x, or p; that unmarked ending signals the mid-level tone.
Why is ꁴ missing? A font or app without Yi coverage may show a box, a blank, or a fallback glyph instead. Use a font with Yi coverage; the missing shape is a display issue.
Technical and language-specific; use it in Nuosu Yi text or when discussing Yi writing.
Alone, it will not carry a dependable message to someone who does not read Nuosu.

1Why does ꁴ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
