What ꀜ means

It writes one mid-tone Nuosu Yi syllable.

Yi Pinyin spells this syllable as bie, using Latin letters to represent Nuosu syllables for reference and input. A syllable can represent different words in context, and a Nuosu word may span several syllables. The full word supplies the meaning.

How did Nuosu Yi writing develop?

It developed across regional Yi traditions; no single origin is settled.

The earliest surviving example commonly cited is an inscription on a bronze bell dated 1485. Reports describe earlier stone, bronze, pottery and bone examples, but the script's age and birthplace remain debated. The earliest paper and sheepskin texts date to around 1500. Nuosu tradition credits Aki with making the script; that is an origin story, not a settled historical attribution.

Nuosu writing recorded ritual, magic, medicine and family-lineage knowledge. Bimo, Nuosu ritual specialists, often copied texts by hand. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, bimo largely controlled writing; by the mid-twentieth century, some elite families also used it for letters. Reforms in the 1970s standardized a Liangshan form for literacy, schools and public administration. Other Yi traditions in China's Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi regions use different forms and character inventories, so readers cannot assume they can read across varieties. Traditional Yi ideographs are considered apparently independent of Han Chinese characters, despite visual resemblance.

Why does ꀜ show as a box?

The font may lack Yi coverage; the text can still be intact.

Apps draw text with a chosen font and fallback fonts. If none supports Yi, a square or replacement mark may appear. A font with Yi coverage can display it.

Different fonts may draw the same character with different proportions without changing its encoded identity.
