What ꍡ means
Its earliest surviving example dates to 1485.
Traditional Yi writing, called Cuan or Wei, varied by place. One tradition credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty, though its origin remains uncertain. Bimo (village ritual specialists) passed down ritual, magic, medical, and family-lineage texts. Liangshan’s standard was devised in 1974, made official in 1980, and applies only to that Yi variety.
Its shape is drawn by the reader’s installed font and can vary across displays.
“Chat” is the standard romanized label, not the syllable’s English meaning.
