yi syllable chot

Yi syllable Chot

874/1165

ꍩ is a syllable in Nuosu, a Yi language; the Latin spelling “chot” marks a high, level tone—a steady high pitch in speech. Its word-level meaning comes from the surrounding Nuosu text, so the syllable alone needs context.

What ꍩ means

It represents a Nuosu syllable, not a fixed English word.

In the standard Latin romanization, “chot” labels this syllable; its final t marks a high, level tone, a steady high pitch.

To translate it, read the complete Nuosu word in its sentence.

Where did Yi writing come from?

It developed through older regional Yi forms.

The tradition has no agreed inventor or start date. The earliest surviving example with a secure date is an inscription on a bronze bell from 1485.

Bimo priests—Yi ritual specialists—copied older forms in traditional Yi texts used for religious, medical, magical, and genealogical work. Scholars differ on whether those forms mainly represent syllables, pictures, ideas, or whole words. The Liangshan standard, devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy, is not used for every Yi variety and uses Chinese punctuation.

How do I type ꍩ?

Use the Yi input method or enter its Unicode value.

On Windows, add the Yi input method, enter the syllable's sound spelling, then choose ꍩ from the candidates. In Microsoft Office, type A369 and press AltX; in supported Linux GTK text fields, press CtrlShiftU, type A369, then Enter or Space.

If it appears as a box, the text may still be correct; the active font may lack Yi coverage. A Yi-capable font such as Nuosu SIL is available as of 2026.

Neutral in Nuosu writing; outside a Yi-language context, its meaning may be opaque.

Why does ꍩ show as a box?

It is a font-coverage problem. The text can contain ꍩ correctly even when the active font has no Yi glyph; use a font that supports Yi.

Is ꍩ Chinese?

No. It is a Yi syllable sign used in Nuosu writing. The Liangshan standard uses Chinese punctuation, but ꍩ belongs to Yi writing.
