yi syllable chuop

Yi Syllable Chuop

873/1165

ꍨ is a written Yi syllable, not a whole message or chat reaction. In the standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) writing system, its sound is spelled in Latin letters as chuop; understand it from the surrounding Yi word or sentence. The Liangshan standard covers one Yi dialect, not every Yi language or local writing tradition.

What ꍨ means

It writes a Yi syllable, not a standalone message. In the standardized Liangshan Yi system, also called Nuosu, chuop is the Latin-letter spelling of the syllable. Its final p marks a low-falling tone: the voice starts low and falls.

By itself, ꍨ gives no reliable mood, joke, or instruction. Read it as part of the surrounding Yi word or sentence.

Where does ꍨ come from?

It belongs to a script shaped by regional traditions. Yi script's beginnings are debated. The earliest purported evidence includes Yi graphs on Western Han-period objects dated 206 BC to AD 9; surviving paper texts date to around 1500.

Older regional forms served bimo, Yi ritual specialists who read manuscripts aloud in ceremonies such as funerals, rites for the soul, healing, exorcism, and divination.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially announced in 1980. It selected older local forms for one dialect, then carried Yi writing into official documents, newspapers, and literature. The standard grew out of traditional Yi writing.

How do I type ꍨ?

Use a Yi input method and select its character candidate. Enter chuop as the Latin-letter spelling of the syllable, then choose the matching Yi character from the candidate list.

In an editor that supports hexadecimal Unicode entry, A368 may work. Microsoft's Windows instructions say to add Yi in language settings, switch to the Yi input method, type the Latin letters, and select a candidate, as of 2024-06-20.

Outside Yi-language text, this reads as specialist writing rather than a shared chat reaction.

Don't send it to express a feeling; the recipient may see only an unfamiliar character.

Why does ꍨ show as a box?

A box usually means the font or app cannot display the character. Unicode allows unsupported characters to appear as a missing-glyph box or hexadecimal placeholder; use a font with Yi syllable coverage.
