What ꅏ means
It represents one syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi writing. The romanized label ddurx ends in x, which marks the secondary high tone, a pitch category.
Yi writing predates its modern standard. Some Guizhou objects are proposed as evidence from the Western Han period; the oldest securely dated surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from around 1485. Older Yi texts served religious, magical, medical, and family-history purposes. Devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, the Liangshan standard adapted older writing for literacy in one regional variety of Yi.
