What ꄓ means
It writes one Nuosu syllable, not a standalone word.
The surrounding Yi word supplies the translation. In the Liangshan romanization, the spelling is dep: final p marks the low-falling tone, not an extra consonant.
How did the Liangshan Yi script develop?
The standardized Liangshan syllabary was shaped from older local Yi forms.
Older Yi writing, historically known as Cuan or Wei, used ideographs—signs for words or ideas. One widespread origin tradition credits Aki with devising the script during the Tang dynasty. Village priests used local forms for ritual and magical texts, medicine, genealogies, and literature; the oldest securely dated surviving inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. Based on older Northern Yi forms, it is a syllabary for the Liangshan (Nuosu) dialect, not a universal script for every Yi variety. A 2024 study interviewing 22 Nuosu adults found digital writing centered on literature, art, and script learning rather than interpersonal communication.
Use it in Nuosu writing or language discussion; by itself, it does not translate a complete message.
A bare ꄓ is one syllable, not a whole message.
