yi syllable pu

Yi syllable Pu

ꁌ is Liangshan Yi’s “pu” syllable. Latin “pu” is a reading, not an English gloss; older Yi writing varied regionally.

What ꁌ means

It records one Liangshan Yi syllable in the modern standard. Its “pu” label follows the dialect’s romanization.

Older Yi writing used local idea signs, inspired by Chinese writing but not copied from Chinese characters. Bimo ritual specialists transmitted religious, medical, and genealogical texts. Tradition credits Aki in the Tang dynasty; its origin remains uncertain.

A tablet dated AD 223–237 preserves Yi graphs whose interpretation is debated; a bronze bell from 1485 is another early record. The Liangshan standard, devised in 1974 to improve literacy and promulgated in 1980, uses Northern Yi forms for that dialect alone.
