yi syllable put

Yi Syllable Put

75/1165

ꁊ represents one syllable in Nuosu writing; by itself, it has no complete translation. The romanized label put identifies that syllable, while its meaning depends on the surrounding Nuosu word. Its history runs from local manuscript traditions to a Liangshan standard.

What ꁊ means

ꁊ marks one Nuosu syllable, with no complete meaning by itself.

The Yi-script character ꁊ represents one Nuosu syllable. In Nuosu romanization, it is labeled put; the final t marks the high tone. That spelling identifies the syllable, not its full meaning: the surrounding word and sentence provide the translation.

If someone sends ꁊ alone, read it as a script sample or syllable reference, not a complete message or universal reaction. Ask what word or sentence it came from.

How did the Liangshan Yi standard develop?

The Liangshan standard grew out of older Yi writing.

Before standardization, traditional Yi writing was maintained largely by bimo, Nuosu ritual specialists, for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. It was passed from teacher to student rather than serving as a shared everyday writing system across all Yi communities. A Yi-and-Chinese inscription on a bronze bell from 1485 is commonly cited as the earliest surviving dated monument; undated manuscripts may be older.

A standardized form for Liangshan/Northern Yi was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It draws on older Yi traditions, whose forms and character sets varied. The standard is for Liangshan/Northern Yi, not every Yi variety. Yi writing is structurally independent of Han Chinese characters, the Chinese character system.

Ordinary in Nuosu writing; alone outside that context, it reads as a syllable reference.

Treat put as a romanized syllable label, not a complete word.
