yi syllable fop

Yi Syllable Fop

216/1165

ꃗ represents one syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi writing system, used for the Nuosu language; it is not a complete word with a stand-alone English translation. Its romanized label is “fop”: the final p marks a low falling tone, not a final p sound. A box in its place usually means the font lacks the Yi glyph.

What ꃗ means

It represents one Liangshan Yi syllable, not a complete word.

The standard Liangshan Yi writing system is used for Nuosu. In its Latin-letter romanization, this syllable is written “fop”: “f” and “o” represent its consonant and vowel, while final “p” marks a low falling tone—the pitch drops—and is not pronounced as a final consonant. The label identifies a spoken syllable, not an English word or translation.

In a longer Yi passage, neighboring syllables provide the words and context; by itself, ꃗ does not tell you a full word or reaction.

When did Yi writing first appear?

Its exact beginnings are unclear; dated evidence reaches 1485.

In regional Yi traditions, bimo—Yi ritual specialists—used writing for ritual, healing, divination, family histories, and epic stories. Texts survive in manuscripts and inscriptions on stone and bronze, preserving and passing on community knowledge.

Some Yi traditions trace the writing further back, but the earliest securely dated surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485; many manuscripts are undated. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, selecting a teachable set of syllable signs from older regional writing. It represents one standard, not every Yi writing tradition.

Language-specific and technical; it reads as Yi to someone who knows the script or has enough surrounding text.

The final “p” in “fop” marks a low falling tone; it is not pronounced as a final p.
