yi syllable gat

Yi Syllable Gat

483/1165

ꇢ is a syllable in the standardized Liangshan Yi script; “gat” is its romanized label, not an English meaning. Its word value depends on the surrounding Yi text. The modern standard grew out of regional writing traditions that include texts taught by bimo, Yi ritual specialists.

What ꇢ means

ꇢ is a syllable in the Liangshan Yi standard.

“gat” is its romanized label, not an English gloss. The final t marks high tone (a high pitch), not a consonant at the end. In a Yi text, neighboring syllables and context give it its word value.

How did the Yi script become standardized?

Yi writing grew through regional traditions before Liangshan gained a standard.

Some objects interpreted as Yi-writing inscriptions have been dated to Western Han (206 BC–AD 9), though their dating and interpretation remain debated. The earliest paper Yi texts described in historical accounts date to around 1500.

Traditional Yi texts were copied and taught through local lineages. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, transmitted religious, medical, genealogical, and epic works. The standardized Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy.

Which Yi tradition does ꇢ belong to?

ꇢ belongs to one regional standard, not every Yi tradition.

Yi writing has regional forms that differ in glyphs, sounds, direction, and teaching lineages. The standardized Liangshan form serves the Liangshan/Nuosu dialect; it is not a universal form for all Yi communities.

A 2023 study of public signs in Liangshan found that the visibility of Yi tracked local policy support. This concerns signs across the region; it gives no separate meaning to ꇢ.

Textual and language-specific; it signals Yi-script context, not a mood.

Sent alone, it may look like an unexplained fragment.

Why does ꇢ show up as a box?

The active font may lack Yi Syllables coverage. ꇢ is a text character drawn by a font, so choose one with Yi support; it has no emoji artwork fallback.

Can I send ꇢ as a reaction?

Only if the recipient reads Yi or you give it clear language context. On its own, it names a syllable, not a shared reaction.
