What ꇤ means
It spells the Liangshan Yi syllable ga. In the standard Latin spelling, g is like the k in sky, and a like father. Its unmarked pitch stays level in the middle; context supplies the word.
Older Yi writing varied by region; village Bimo (ritual priests) passed down religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. The Liangshan standard grew from these traditions; devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, it entered textbooks, literature, and newspapers. A bronze bell dated 1485 bears the earliest surviving inscription commonly cited; older finds proposed as Yi writing remain disputed. The standard covers Liangshan Yi, not every Yi variety.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꇤ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
