What ꇰ means
A Nuosu word completes the meaning of this syllable. In Liangshan romanization, ꇰ is spelled ge; bare ge marks midlevel pitch. The earliest secure paper evidence for Yi writing dates to around 1500; earlier inscriptions on stone, bronze, pottery, and bone are also reported. Bimo, Yi ritual specialists, used regional forms in genealogies, cosmology, divination, medicine, and ceremonies. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, adapting older forms to Nuosu syllables in education and public life. It represents Liangshan Nuosu.
