What ꇮ means
In Nuosu Yi, ꇮ carries a “can” sense.
A 2022 Nuosu Yi syllabary writes it as kɯ55—a Latin-letter syllable spelling with tone digits—and glosses it “can; be able; know how to.” The Liangshan Yi romanization used in Unicode’s name was introduced in 1956; final t marks high tone. Yi characters represent syllables that join into words and sentences, so one glyph alone does not settle a whole sentence’s translation.
How did the Liangshan Yi form develop?
The Unicode set follows the standardized Liangshan branch of Yi. Older regional Yi script traditions were used by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, in ritual, medical, genealogical, and other manuscripts. A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is commonly cited as the oldest securely dated surviving example; earlier objects and undated texts remain debated.
A standardized writing system for Liangshan Yi was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to support literacy. It appears in textbooks, literature, and newspapers; other Yi writing traditions use different forms.
Someone sent me ꇮ—what does it mean?
Read it as Yi text if the sender is writing in Yi.
Within Nuosu Yi writing, ꇮ is one syllable and surrounding text supplies the phrase’s sense. Alone in an English-only chat, it is an unexplained Yi character.
Neutral in Yi writing; by itself, its reading depends on knowing the Yi language.
The Latin spelling “get” is not the English verb; final t marks high tone.
