What ꈥ means
It writes the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized as ggop.
It represents a syllable, not a standalone English idea. In the standard Latin-letter spelling, final p marks the low-falling tone; the surrounding Yi word and sentence supply the meaning.
How did Liangshan Yi writing take shape?
The modern standard grew out of older local Yi writing.
Traditional Yi writing had many local forms. It was used especially for ritual, magical, medical, and family-history texts passed down through village priestly lineages. A traditional account credits a figure named Aki with devising the script during the Tang dynasty (618–907); the earliest securely dated surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485.
A Latin-letter scheme for writing the Liangshan dialect appeared in 1956. A standardized form of the older Yi script was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. The resulting syllabary represents Liangshan Yi; other Yi varieties and local writing traditions can use different forms.
Is ꈥ Yi writing or a Han character?
It is a Yi syllable sign, not a Han character.
Older Yi ideographs imitated Han writing, but the modern Liangshan syllabary developed from that Yi script tradition. The historical resemblance does not make ꈥ a Han character.
Language-specific and script-based; its meaning comes from the Yi word and sentence.
Alone, it gives a syllable, not an English translation; read it with the surrounding Yi text.
