yi syllable guot

Yi syllable guot

487/1165

ꇦ is a Liangshan Yi syllable written guot in the language’s Latin-letter romanization. The final t marks a high, steady tone; it is not pronounced as a final consonant. In Yi text, neighboring syllables supply the word’s meaning, so alone it has no complete translation. Type guot with a Yi input method and select the matching character.

What ꇦ means

It is the Liangshan Yi syllable guot. The standard Latin-letter system, Yi Pinyin, writes it guot; pronounce it with a k sound and an open o, held at a high, even pitch ([kɔ⁵⁵]). The final t marks that tone rather than a final consonant.

Traditional Yi writing, historically called Cuan or Wei, used ideographic signs—characters representing words or ideas—and appears not to derive from Han Chinese characters. One origin tradition credits a figure named Aki with devising the old script during the Tang dynasty.

The earliest surviving inscription is on a bronze bell dated 1485; manuscript scholarship places early examples in the 15th–16th centuries. Traditional texts served religious, magical, medical, and genealogical purposes; Nuosu ritual priests, called bimo, used them in ceremonies, while other manuscripts covered literature, astronomy, and history. The standardized Liangshan Yi syllabary was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980; it is used in education, books, newspapers, public notices, and video subtitles.

What happens when someone sends ꇦ alone?

It is an isolated syllable, so the message gives no full translation.

In running Liangshan Yi, syllables normally appear together without spaces; read ꇦ with its neighbors. Alone, it may be a sample or fragment. Ask for the surrounding word or sentence to translate it.

It belongs in Yi-language text; its high-level tone is part of pronunciation, not a social mood.

Alone, it cannot translate a complete word or sentence.
