yi syllable hie

Yi syllable Hie

625/1165

ꉰ represents the Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) syllable romanized as “hie”; that spelling is a reading, not a translation. Without Yi context, the glyph alone does not reveal the intended word.

Text symbol

What ꉰ means

It marks the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized as hie. The Latin-letter spelling gives its reading, not a word translation.

Traditional Yi script, historically called Cuan or Wei, carried religious, medical, and family-history texts passed down by bi-mox (Yi priests). The earliest dated surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell from 1485; that dates the evidence, not the script’s origin.

The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 to widen literacy. It adapted older Yi writing into a syllabary, uses some Han-character conventions without descending from Han characters, and covers only Liangshan Yi.

Why does ꉰ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
