What ꆶ means
ꆶ is one Liangshan Yi syllable, not an emoji or chat reaction. Its standard romanized label is “hlyr,” not an English word or translation. In this spelling system, final t, p, or x marks a tone; hlyr ends with none of those letters and is labeled midlevel.
The syllable’s word meaning depends on the Liangshan Yi text around it. By itself, ꆶ is best read as a sample of Yi writing.
Why was Yi writing used?
Traditional Yi writing carried ritual and practical knowledge. Bi-mox priests, Yi ritual specialists, used it for scripture, legend, history, medicine, astrology, and other ritual or practical texts. Surviving writing appears on paper, cloth, bamboo, wood, bone, horn, and rock.
The modern standardized Liangshan syllabary is a distinct layer, devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. Chenghua bell inscriptions in Guizhou are among the earliest securely dated surviving evidence, from the 15th century. Many Yi manuscripts are undated, so the writing tradition may be older.
Why does ꆶ display as a box or resist typing?
A Yi-capable font is needed to display it. The outline can vary by typeface; without Yi coverage, a box means the character is missing from the font, not that ꆶ has changed.
A Liangshan Yi input method based on romanization may map hlyr to ꆶ. Typing hlyr on a regular keyboard produces Latin letters unless that input method is active. In JSON or JavaScript, use the escape \uA1B6.

Without surrounding Yi text, do not read a lone ꆶ as a chat reaction.
