yi syllable hnox

Yi Syllable Hnox

376/1165

ꅷ is a syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi (Nuosu) writing; on its own, it has no dependable English translation. In Yi text, it contributes to a word whose meaning comes from the surrounding text. The modern syllabary grew from older, locally varied Yi writing traditions.

What ꅷ means

ꅷ is a syllable in the Liangshan Yi standard, also called Nuosu.

Hnox is the Liangshan romanized label, not an English word. A Yi dictionary gives its pronunciation as [n̥o³⁴]: an n-like nasal made without vocal-cord vibration, followed by o with rising pitch. In Yi, tone—the pitch pattern of a syllable—can distinguish syllables. ꅷ alone has no reliable English gloss; the word and surrounding Yi text supply its meaning.

How old is Yi writing?

Yi writing predates the modern standard, but its early history is debated.

The earliest securely dated surviving example is an inscription on the Chenghua Bell, cast in 1485. Earlier origins remain debated because many manuscripts lack dates.

Older Yi writing traditions varied by region. Bimo—Yi ritual specialists—used manuscripts for ceremonies, family histories, medicine, divination, and inherited knowledge, rather than as a shared everyday writing system across Yi regions. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It developed from older Yi ideographic traditions into a syllabary used for literacy, public documents, newspapers, and literature; it represents one regional tradition, not every Yi writing tradition.

How do I type ꅷ?

Use a Yi input method to compose Yi text.

A Yi input method is the practical route for entering it. Input and display are separate: software can accept this character even if the selected font cannot display it.

Neutral as text, but specialized: it signals Liangshan Yi writing rather than a chat reaction.

Sent alone, it gives someone who cannot read Yi no dependable message to decode.

Is ꅷ an emoji?

No. It is a Yi syllable used in written language. Its shape comes from the text font, rather than from a platform's emoji design.

Why does ꅷ show as a square?

It can. A blank box means the selected font lacks this Yi character. In 2026, Noto Sans Yi and Nuosu SIL document fonts with Yi coverage.
