Yi Syllable Hnop

377/1165

ꅸ represents the Liangshan Yi syllable romanized as hnop; a grammar of Nuosu, the Liangshan Yi language, glosses one use as “drive.” In Yi writing it is one syllable in a word, so the sentence supplies its meaning. Its standardized form belongs to a much older, locally varied Yi writing tradition.

What ꅸ means

It represents a Liangshan Yi syllable; its full meaning depends on context. Yi Pinyin is the Latin-letter spelling system for standardized Liangshan Yi: hnop names this syllable, and final p marks a low-falling tone (the voice falls in pitch). A Nuosu grammar uses hnop in one vocabulary example glossed “drive,” not as a fixed English meaning for ꅸ.

In Nuosu writing, ꅸ is one syllable among others; surrounding Yi text supplies the word and sentence meaning. If someone sends it alone, treat it as Yi writing and ask for the surrounding text before interpreting it.

How did Yi script develop?

The standardized Yi syllabary grew from an older, locally varied writing tradition. Traditional Yi writing, historically known as Cuan or Wei, used signs for words or ideas. An origin tradition credits Aki with devising it during the Tang dynasty (618–907). Some Guizhou bronze and stone artifacts are assigned to the Western Han period (206 BC to AD 9), while the earliest surviving monumental inscription is on a bronze bell dated 1485.

Local traditions varied in sign shapes and writing direction; village priests preserved texts for ritual, magical, medical, and family-history purposes. The standardized Liangshan script was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 for that dialect, not every Yi variety. A proposal published in 2024 lists its uses in education, official writing, newspapers, literature, public signs, notices, and video subtitles.

Traditional Yi signs appear not to derive from Han Chinese characters. One unsettled proposal links the old Yi script and Shang oracle-bone inscriptions (divination marks carved on bones) to a lost script used in a neighboring region by Qiangic-speaking communities.

Neutral in Liangshan Yi writing; opaque to someone who does not read that script.

For someone who cannot read Yi, an isolated syllable can look like stray text; ask for its sentence-level meaning.

Will a Chinese reader understand ꅸ?

Not automatically. It belongs to standardized Liangshan Yi, not Mandarin; a reader who knows that Yi script can read it.

Why does ꅸ show as a box?

Usually a font-coverage gap. The text may still be intact even when the app shows a box, question mark, or blank; use a font with Yi coverage.
