What ꅹ means
It writes the Nuosu Yi syllable hnex. In the Latin-letter spelling used for Liangshan Nuosu, the final x marks a mid-rising tone.
Nuosu books print signs like this in ordinary running text. On its own, ꅹ identifies a Nuosu syllable but has no reliable English translation; the surrounding Nuosu words carry the meaning.
How did Yi writing develop?
The standardized Liangshan form is modern; Yi writing traditions are older. Some scholars attribute stone, bronze, pottery, and bone objects from Guizhou to Yi writing in the Western Han period (206 BC to AD 9). The earliest surviving Yi inscription commonly cited is on a bronze bell dated 1485; paper or parchment texts appear around 1500. Encoding in Unicode in 1999 marks a computer milestone, not the writing system's origin.
Village ritual specialists traditionally used Yi writing for religious, magical, medical, and family-history texts. Regional traditions had different signs and writing directions. The modern Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and formally promulgated in 1980 to support literacy in one Yi dialect. It adapted selected older forms into a phonetic syllabary: a set of signs, one for each syllable. It continues Classical or Traditional Yi writing, is distinct from Han writing, and is not a universal script for every Yi language.
How can I type or display ꅹ?
Use a Nuosu/Yi Pinyin input method. Enter hnex in an input method that supports Yi Pinyin; the final x selects the mid-rising tone. An editor with Unicode hex entry can use A179 if romanized input is unavailable.
If the character appears as a box, the font lacks Yi coverage. Fonts such as Nuosu SIL or Noto Sans Yi include the script.
