What ꉻ means
In the Liangshan standard, ꉻ is the syllable ho. Yi writing records syllables, so this character represents a spoken unit; its meaning depends on the word and sentence around it.
Traditional Yi writing had varied local forms and served ritual, religious, medical, and genealogical record-keeping. The earliest clearly dated surviving example is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485. The Liangshan standard, developed from Classical and local Yi traditions to support literacy, was created in 1974 and made official in 1980; it does not describe every historical or local reading.
Why does ꉻ show as a box?
The font may not include Yi characters. ꉻ is text, and its strokes are drawn by the font in use. If that font lacks Yi coverage, the character may appear as a blank square; a Yi-capable font such as Noto Sans Yi can display it.
To enter Yi text with Microsoft's Windows Yi IME, select Yi input, enter the syllable's phonetic spelling, then choose the matching candidate. The instructions are dated 2024-06-20.
