yi syllable hxiet

Yi Syllable Hxiet

587/1165

ꉊ writes one spoken syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi, also called Nuosu. Its meaning in a sentence comes from the Yi word around it, rather than from an English translation of the character alone. In Yi Pinyin, the final t in hxiet marks a high, steady pitch; it cues the voice, not a final t sound.

What ꉊ means

It writes one Yi syllable; surrounding words give its meaning in context. Each sign in standardized Liangshan Yi stands for one spoken syllable. Tone is the pitch pattern of a syllable; in the Yi Pinyin spelling hxiet, the final t marks high, level pitch.

Traditional Yi script, historically called Cuan or Wei, was not one uniform system. Local forms differed in glyphs, orientation and writing direction, while village priests passed down religious, magical, medical and family-history texts. A Yi tradition credits Aki with devising a script during the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE); the earliest surviving dated example identified in Unicode is a bronze-bell inscription from 1485.

A Latin-letter spelling system for Liangshan Yi was introduced in 1956 to support literacy. A standardized traditional-script form followed: devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It was intended for Liangshan Yi; other Yi varieties have distinct local forms. After standardization, the script also appeared in schools, reference books, newspapers, literature, signs and subtitles. Traditional Yi signs appear to have developed independently of Chinese Han characters.

What does it mean if someone sends ꉊ?

It is a syllable from Yi writing; read it as language in context. A one-character message may be intended as Yi text, but the syllable's word-level meaning depends on its place in the sentence.

Ask the sender for the surrounding Yi words or a translation. In a keyboard, font or script sample, it may simply be a test character.

Ordinary Yi writing in context; outside a Yi-language exchange, the syllable may be unfamiliar.

Treat a lone ꉊ as a syllable first; ask what the sender means in context.
