yi syllable hxit

Yi syllable Hxit

583/1165

ꉆ is a Liangshan Nuosu syllable that can mean “eight” or “stand/stand up,” depending on its neighbors. Its romanized form, hxit, sounds roughly like “hee” on a high, level pitch. Alone, it does not tell a reader which word is intended.

What ꉆ means

It can mean “eight” or “stand,” depending on the word.

In the Liangshan Nuosu writing system, ꉆ is the syllable hxit, pronounced roughly like “hee” on a high, even pitch. Neighboring syllables distinguish “eight” from “stand/stand up.”

Nuosu origin stories link writing with Aki. A bronze-bell inscription dated 1485 is cited as the earliest surviving example of Yi writing. The modern Liangshan syllabary was standardized in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. On Linux with GTK, press CtrlShiftU, type a246, then Enter.

What if someone sends ꉆ by itself?

By itself, it does not identify which Nuosu word is meant.

Nuosu readers can read it as one syllable in a larger sentence, but readers unfamiliar with Nuosu may not know how to interpret it. Alone, it leaves “eight” and “stand/stand up” open; it is language text rather than a universal reaction.

Traditional Yi writing had regional traditions rather than one uniform system. Bimo, or village priests, used it especially in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Some Chinese records called related local traditions the Cuan script. A link to older Qiangic writing traditions, from a neighboring language group, has been proposed but remains unsettled.

Why can ꉆ look different or disappear?

Its appearance depends on whether a font includes Yi characters.

Without Yi font coverage, a device may show a missing-character box or a fallback glyph. When the character is supported, font styles can draw the same text glyph differently.

Inside a Nuosu sentence it is language; in general chat it reads as an unexplained written syllable, not a universal reaction.

Do not read it as “eight” automatically; “stand/stand up” is also recorded.

Questions people ask

1

Does a different shape mean it is a different syllable?

Usually no. A font can vary the design of the same encoded character; a missing-glyph box means the font lacks Yi support.
