Yi syllable mgur

What ꉅ means

It is Yi mgur; the surrounding word gives the translation.

A Yi dictionary gives several verb senses: picking or sorting, tidying up, and colliding. These are possible word meanings, not a guaranteed translation of this syllable alone; the surrounding Yi word and dialect matter.

Where did modern Yi writing come from?

The modern standard condensed older regional traditions into a Liangshan syllabary.

Yi writing was transmitted by bimo, Yi ritual specialists, through scripture, legends, histories, medicine, astrology, and genealogies. Some proposed ancestors are associated with Western Han-era objects, but the oldest reliably dated examples are the Chenghua Bell Inscriptions from the 15th century.

The modern standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 to improve literacy. It represents one Liangshan dialect, not every Yi variety, and is historically connected to older Yi ideographs. Its punctuation follows Han (Chinese) conventions; character lookup uses radicals, the components used to find entries, also following Han practice. A 2026 study of Liangshan students found Yi strongest in family and close-peer speech, while Chinese was preferred for public writing and social messaging.

How do I type ꉅ?

On Windows, use the Yi input method and choose the mgur candidate.

Microsoft's 2024 Windows instructions describe a Yi IME: select Yi, type the phonetic spelling mgur with ordinary keys, then choose the matching character from the candidates. If ꉅ appears as a box, the active font lacks Yi coverage; that is a font issue, not a different character.

It suits Yi-language writing; by itself, it gives no clear mood signal to someone who cannot read Yi.

Don't send it alone as a mood signal unless the recipient reads Yi.
