Yi Syllable Jjy

It is a Nuosu syllable read with the words around it. The romanized spelling jjy follows Yiyu Pinyin, a way to write Nuosu syllables with Latin letters, not an English word. Here, the absence of a final t, p or x marks the steady mid-level tone.

By itself, ꐯ does not identify one English word; the neighboring Nuosu syllables make the phrase translatable.

What does ꐯ mean when someone sends it alone?

Read it as Nuosu text if that fits the conversation. On its own, ꐯ gives too little context to translate. If no Nuosu conversation surrounds it, it may be a font or input test.

How did the Nuosu Yi writing tradition develop?

The standardized Liangshan form grew from regional Yi writing traditions.

Early dates are debated. Some scholars treat inscriptions from the Western Han period as possible early Yi evidence; surviving paper texts date to around 1500, while a bronze bell dated 1485 is commonly cited as the oldest surviving example of Yi writing.

Traditional Yi forms were kept chiefly by bimo priests (ritual specialists) for religious, magical, medical and genealogical manuscripts, and passed down through local teacher-to-student lines. The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980 for the Liangshan dialect. It follows an older Yi writing tradition, but it does not represent every regional Yi writing tradition or language.
