It records one syllable within a Nuosu Yi word. The surrounding Yi characters supply the word's meaning.

How did the Yi script develop?

Traditional writing has forms and a later standard. Traditional Yi texts were used in ritual writing, family histories, and popular books; the script is not considered derived from Han characters. The oldest surviving Yi inscription on a bronze bell is dated to 1485. A Liangshan Yi standard was designed in 1974 and formally promulgated in 1980 to support literacy.
