What ꏪ means
It writes the Nuosu syllable juo; context fixes its reading.
A Nuosu dictionary glosses juo as “press flat”; that is a clue to the syllable’s sense, not a whole message.
How did ꏪ enter Yi writing?
Nuosu mythology credits Aki with creating Yi writing, while the earliest reliably dated evidence is a bell inscription from the 15th century. Bi-mox priests used Classical Yi, the older written tradition, for scripture, history, medicine, and astrology.
From the 1970s, Liangshan standardization shaped that regional tradition into a phonetic syllabary (a system where signs represent syllables) for education and publishing; it is not a standard for every Yi variety.
