What ꏩ means
It represents one spoken syllable. In juox, final x marks the secondary-high tone; ꏪ is juo at midlevel tone, so their pitch differs.
Local Yi scripts varied; bimo (Yi ritual specialists) passed family manuscripts down for religious, medical, and genealogical use. Traditional Yi signs form a writing tradition distinct from Chinese characters. The oldest surviving Yi inscription is on a bronze bell dated 1485; that date belongs to the inscription, not ꏩ. Devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980, the Liangshan standard adapted Yi writing to improve literacy. It writes Nuosu, one Yi variety.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ꏩ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Yi Syllables block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
